Crepe skin is the thin, finely wrinkled skin that looks like crepe paper. It usually shows up on the arms, neck, chest and legs. Most people reach for a thicker body lotion. That helps for a few hours, but it rarely changes how the skin looks over time.
Korean skincare takes a different approach, and it is one of the reasons K-beauty routines have such a devoted following among women over 50.
What actually causes crepe skin
Crepey skin comes from a loss of collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and springy. Sun exposure is the biggest driver. Aging, weight changes, and dehydration make it worse. Lotion adds moisture to the surface, but it does not do much for the structure underneath.
The Korean approach: layers, not one heavy cream
Instead of one thick lotion, Korean routines layer thin, water-based products that each do one job:
- Gentle exfoliation. Mild acids such as lactic acid or PHA clear dull surface cells so the next layers absorb.
- Essence or toner with humectants. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin pull water into the skin.
- Active serum. Retinoids and peptides are among the best-studied ingredients for supporting collagen, and centella asiatica soothes the skin.
- Sealing moisturizer. A lighter cream with ceramides locks the layers in.
- Daily sunscreen. The step most people skip on their arms and chest, and the one dermatologists stress most.

Why it works better than lotion alone
Layering lets each ingredient work at the right strength without one heavy product blocking the rest. Retinoids in particular have good evidence for improving skin texture with consistent use. Most people see a difference after 8 to 12 weeks, not overnight.
A few cautions
Start retinoids slowly, two or three nights a week, to avoid irritation. If you are pregnant or have a skin condition, check with a dermatologist first. Be wary of any product that promises to “erase” crepe skin in days.
